Also below is a brief introduction to the reserve, which I thought you might find interesting. The site is reasonably level, with just two kissing gates to negotiate, but the ground can be a bit muddy, so wellies or a reasonable pair of walking boots are recommended. If you have binoculars and/or a magnifier it would be worth bringing them along. Rushbeds Wood is a very pleasant place to spend a few hours, so you might also like to bring a packed lunch and make a day of it. On the other hand if you fancy something a bit more substantial the nearest pubs are The Pheasant Inn (tel 01844 237104, website www.thepheasant.co.uk) or Red Lion (tel 01844 238339, website www.redlionbrill.co.uk), both in Brill, or the Poachers Pocket (tel 01844 208220, website www.thepoacherspocket.co.uk).

Sadly, in this world of 'health & safety' I have to point out that although I have chosen sites that are as hazard-free as possible the real world is full of things like rabbit holes, thorns, stinging nettles and tree roots, and that we are all responsible for our own safety while on these walks. Finding the reserve:
The reserve car park is shown on Ordnance Survey Explorer map 180 and Landranger maps 164 and 165 at grid reference SP672155.
From Thame: From the main roundabout on the north side of Thame take the B4011 to Long Crendon. There, opposite the Gurkha Tavern on your left, turn right, then left at the T-junction (signposted to Chilton and Dorton). After the sharp left-hand bend in Chilton turn right by the church, go through Dorton and take the next left towards Brill. Go thruogh Wotton then take the next right towards Ludgershall. The gate to the reserve car park is about 100 yards along this road, on the left (look out for the dragonfly sign). The car park is quite cramped, so please try to park reasonably tightly so that we can all fit in.
Rushbeds Wood
This is a surviving fragment of the old royal hunting forest of Bernwood. Though most of the trees were felled in the 1940s, new ones have taken their place and the wood has held on to many of the plants that grow only in ancient woodland, such as bluebells and the tiny moschatel (also known as town-hall-clock). The wide, sunny ride that runs through the centre of the wood is an excellent place to look for butterflies and other insects, while in the wood itself there are usually woodpeckers and warblers, with the possibility of seeing and hearing buzzards. Attached to the wood is a wonderful meadow, alive in summer with carpets of wildflowers and the sound of grasshoppers.
